History of
Trips With a Mission: The Least of These Children's
Home(LOT). Awutu
Anomawobi, Ghana
Trips With a Mission was organized by people
who care about people. In the formative years we engaged in
various types of service oriented projects from upgrading a
preschool and providing a community center in South Andros to
annual volunteer medical camps in Nepal. All of our projects
have been wonderful opportunities to reach out to others but
in the past few years we have refined our focus to work
exclusively with children, specifically the Least of These.
Who are the Least of These? They are the ones
who have no one. They are the poorest of the poor. Children
who would have had no chance but who now have a bright future!
They are the ones Jesus was speaking about when He said,
"Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of
these, my brethren, you did it to me." Matthew 25:40.
Changing futures for one child at a time! It
has been our privilege to help children who would otherwise
have never had hope. Now that is an amazing concept!! Our
Children's Homes and Schools are in regions which have no
social services, where poverty is the norm, hunger is routine
and help is non-existent. We are a very small organization
which can be a hindrance because we don't get the recognition
or large volume of funds generated by larger organizations.
Being small has its advantages though. We know every child in
each home. Interacting with them and getting better acquainted
with them, is an enormous blessing! All of the people working
in our homes have become personal friends. We visit our homes
regularly and e-mail several times a week. This isn't a
business but a calling from God.
GOALS
Trips with a mission have
philosophies which makes it unique compared to many other
Christian organizations.
Our goals are to solely engage in work that God has
guided us to. We realize that only with God as our partner can
we truly hope to succeed.
We are so intent on doing
everything we can for the children that we do not draw a
salary so that all of the donations can go directly to the
projects.
We have an ongoing relationship with the individuals
who administrate our overseas projects. We do not build a
facility then move on. Our continuing contact lends moral,
financial and spiritual support which ultimately leads to very
successful projects.
We help those who would
otherwise have never received help. We work where there is no
welfare or social services.
To date our projects are
self-sufficient and we will endeavor to keep them that way.
Trips with
a Mission is totally funded by donations. When a new project
is undertaken we have to raise the necessary money. It takes
hard work, lots of time and tremendous commitment
Children's Home and Mission School in
Ghana
Thirty-five minutes northwest
of Accra, the capital city of Ghana, is a small village named
Awutu Anomawobi. The friendly people of this village live in
tiny, one-room, mud brick shacks. They have no running water,
toilets or kitchens. All cooking is done outdoors over an open
fire while chickens scratch looking for scraps. The people of
this village, like most Ghanaian villages, are extremely poor.
Chief Nai Tetteh Brang, the head man of the village sold us 30
acres of land where we have begun building the first
Children's Home, and as funds are generated, will build a
school. In Ghana, 49.9% of adults over 15 years old are
totally illiterate. Our school will educate the abandoned
children who live in the Home as well as the
community!
The construction of the first Children's Home
began in late summer 2004. The foundation, floor and walls
have been completed but we had to send the workers home in
October because of lack of funds. The walls stand erect, open
to the sky, waiting for the floor of the second story to be
poured. In the meantime, the children wait....
With the help of some philanthropist and
volunteers, the first children's home was dedicated in April,
2005 and now operating with about 16 children who were
admitted into the home from different parts of the country
because they do not have anyone to take care of them. The orphanage now has electricity.
THINGS NEEDED FOR THE HOME
Farm
We need a
farm that will produce food crops mainly maize, yam, tomatoes,
cassava and plantain etc. to support the home.
Borehole
Water is used to do all household
chores; it is an essential thing in ones life. Our children
need good water to drink, cook, wash their clothes and to
clean their environment as well. As a result we will need to
construct a borehole which will serve as a source of water
supply for the home.
Volunteers
We will need some volunteers to
help take care of the children after school and other
household chores.
