Teacher Volunteer Project (TVP) in Ghana

PROGRAMME DETAILS:
The volunteer teaching opportunities are spread all over Ghana, in Primary, Junior Secondary Schools and Senior Secondary Schools. We are also able to place participants in Technical or Vocational institutions.
A TYPICAL DAY
Wake at say 6.30am, bath, breakfast. Then to school at 7.30-8.00. Teach as your teaching schedule provides. Lunch around 12noon. Return to teach till 2 or 3pm. (Number of hours of teaching varies from school to school. Range: 2-5 hours of teaching per day). After school hours it's up to the volunteer to plan the remainder of the day. About 6pm: Supper is served. There is no shortage of friendly school colleagues and towns folk to keep you company, show you around and entertain you.
All it takes to be a Volunteer- teacher is your high school education; and you must be at least 18 years. You don't have to be a Certified Teacher.
One or more years of college education in any particular subject areas qualifies you to teach on those subjects at the primary, secondary, technical or vocational levels.

PROGRAMME AREA

We place volunteers in schools in Accra, the capital city and in other towns and villages within a 200 miles radius from the capital Accra. Volunteers can choose the town or village in which they wish to service.

Volunteers have the option to choose between big towns and small towns or villages. Bigger Towns usually have pipe-borne water. Bottled or bagged mineral water can also be bought easily in stores. Many medical facilities are available in bigger towns. Electricity is quite reliable as well as telephones and some Internet cafes.

PROGRAMME SCHEDULE
CATO places Volunteers to match with the academic calendar of schools in Ghana. We can place volunteers during the following period in a year:
1st Term - 15th September to 15th December
2nd Term - 15th January to 31st March
3rd Term - 15th May to 15th August
Volunteers can stay for a period of 4 weeks to a maximum of one year. CATO is able to extend your stay beyond your initial placement period.

FOOD AND ACCOMMODATION

While on the programme you will live with a local Ghanaian family. Your host family will provide you not only with a nice home and meals, but also an invaluable insight into the African culture.

You will be given at least three meals a day (local food like rice, banku, yam or kenkey with stew or soup plus fruits. Western fare like pasta and sauce, chicken fried rice, etc., are also provided on request depending sometimes on where you're placed). Most host families also arrange for recreational activities and cultural events.

You will be assigned your own bedroom with a locker. The rooms in many instances are single rooms. There are always other people in the house as well; and they would be willing to provide you all the necessary assistance your require. In your room will be a bed with a mattress and in most cases a table and chair. You may choose to bring along a mosquito net and a spare bed sheet. Some host families may have a shower and flush toilet. In others, you would have to manage with a bucket of water and a pit toilet.

For anyone not interested in living with a host family, please enquire about additional accommodation options. Married couples are welcome to join the programme.

You will need a weekly budget of up to US$50 to cater for all your other expenses like feeding, bottled water, personal cost, beverages and entertainment.

VISA
Visas are required for Ghana. You will need to apply for your own visa. CATO staff will provide information on consulates and application forms. VACCINATION
